Friday September 14 San Francisco based Del Sol Quartet will perform a program by groundbreaking composers with connections to Northern California: Terry Riley of Redding; Lou Harrison and Gabriela Lena Frank of Berkeley; Ben Johnston of Gualala. Lou Harrison was the first to create an "American Gamelan" influenced by Indonesian traditional music. Gabriela Frank writes music inspired by her cultural heritage of Peru, as well as her classical training. Ben Johnston owes his musical roots to his time in Gualala, where he apprenticed with Harry Partch, the quintessential "California Outsider Artist" who built his own instruments and created his personal musical language. Since 1992, Del Sol has been championing the voices of living composers and presenting them with an aesthetic that is totally Californian.
